There are classic boating communities all over the United States. Here are some of the most popular and the most interesting.

Thousand Islands in Clayton, New York

This quintessential river village is located along the St. Lawrence River, nestled between the northern edge of upstate New York and the Canadian border. This area is a dream haven for classic boating enthusiasts. For miles, they can gaze upon the glistening mahogany and polished brass of the classic boats owned by residents and visitors.

Thousand Islands consists of 1,865 islands that stretch a 50-mile span between Kingston and Brookville. The islands have created cozy passages, quiet channels, and protected harbors. This recreation waterway has a rich boating history. It is home to the world-famous Antique Boat Museum. The museum highlights a variety of boats used by residents of the region, including Native American canoes and racing boats. Commercial and recreational boats fill the museum and draw the attention of locals and tourists alike.

The boats on display at the museum date back to the mid-1800s. There are several themed buildings, but the only one to present ships on the water is the Yacht House.

Lake Dora, Florida

Lake Dora is the most prestigious of the Harris Town Lakes and was a popular retreat for boaters, fishermen, hunters, and many others during the late 1880s. This active antique boat community consists of more than 13,000 residents. The Antique and Classic Boat Society (ACBS) holds the largest event show featuring antique and classic wooden boats in the United States in the neighboring town of Traverse. The show is not only a local's favorite event, but 8,000 to 10,000 people show up from across the world to catch a view of the boats from yesteryears.

Lake Dora and its connecting canals are known for their fishing spots, tour guides, and rentals. There are a variety of options to choose from:

  • Kayaks
  • Boats
  • Jetskis
  • Canoes
  • And more!

Lake Dora is a warm and welcoming community with a unique downtown full of shops and restaurants. This beautiful antique and classic boating community is a must-see for the whole family.

Port Townsend, Washington

The entire city of Port Townsend is a city on the Quimper Peninsula. The first sight upon entering the town is a long horizon of all kinds of boats; new, old, restored, and some needing repair. In the mid-1800s, city planners built up the port with the expectation that it would be the busiest port in the state, partly because of its location on Puget Sound.

The self-proclaimed "Victorian Seaport and Arts Community" centers community life around boating and maritime activities. The port town holds regattas, weekly races, and annual boating events. Port Townsend is home to many classic wooden boats, where many visitors seek repairs for their classic boating expeditions. A yearly Port Townsend Wooden Boat Show attracts visitors from near and far. These are some of the best. You don't want to miss out on this one!

Lakeport, California

This city is 125 miles northwest of Sacramento and sits on Clear Lake. Lakeport has long been known for its marinas and a vast collection of antique and classic boats. Other attractions include wineries, farmer's markets, concerts, rodeos, and theatre and arts events.

Lakeport hosts an annual classic boating show called Wood & Glory at the Konocti Vista Casino. Although it is smaller than other vintage boat shows in the state, this one is rich in history. The city is the oldest in Lake County and even dates back to the Gold Rush era of the 1840s. Lakeport is an all-in-one point of interest. Who wouldn't want to check out the classic boats while being able to catch a rodeo on the same weekend?
